Episode 2-02-2012 - Glenhog Day!

Edison Street Glen is a resident of Cube City, Michigan. On February 2 (Glenhog Day) of each year, the town of Cube City celebrates the beloved Glenhog with a festive atmosphere of music, food, and cake. During the ceremony, which begins just before noon, Edison Street Glen emerges from his temporary home in Cube Land “Edison's Knob”, located in a north wing area about a 1 minute walk from Bago Café (formerly known as Goose Lane Café). According to the tradition, if Edison Street Glen sees his shadow and returns to “Edison’s Knob”, he has predicted six more weeks of winter. If Edison Street Glen does not see his shadow, he has predicted an early spring. The date of Edison Street Glen's prognostication is known as “Glenhog Day” here in Cube City. He is considered to be the world's most famous prognosticating resident. During the rest of the year, Edison Street Glen lives a quiet existence in town keeping dogs from taking dumps on his lawn.

A select group, called the Lunch Gang, takes care of Edison Street Glen year-round; planning the annual ceremony, Friday lunch outings and scenic trips along Telegraph. Members of the Lunch Gang are recognizable for their extreme wisdom and kindness to others.

GIVE IT UP FOR GLENHOG DAY!

Fun Facts about Edison Street Glen
How do you know if it’s really Glen at Edison’s Knob?
For most of the year, Edison Street Glen lives in a climate-controlled home in the heart of Edison Street. He drives himself to Edison’s Knob (his cube) where he plop’s himself in front of his space heater, equipped with heated desk chair. His desk is shaped like a simulated tree stump.  On Glenhog Day, February 2, he climbs on top of his bookshelf, gives out a couple of loud snorts before making his way down to Bago Café’ around noon, to make his prediction.
Where does the name Edison Street come from?
Edison Street was first settled by the local Indians tribe in 1723 and its name comes from the Indian name "Tacoma" which means Big Snow by River. The name woodchuck also has Indian origins, coming from the legend of "Wojak, the groundhog."
How did Edison Street Glen get his name?
The Edison Street Glen’s full name is actually "Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, Telegraph Wander and Weather Prophet Extraordinary." It was so proclaimed by the "Lunch Gang" in 2012, the same year they declared Bago Cafe to be the weather capital of Cube City.
What can I expect at the Glenhog Day celebration?
Plan to arrive at Bago Café no later than 11:30 am because Edison Street Glen does his Prognostication at noon. Remember there’s no shuttles transportation from Edison's Knob to Bago Café and seating is limited for all the seats at the reserved table inside Bago Café are spoken for so you’re screwed. You can arrive before 11:30 am, but if you’re not a member of the Lunch Gang we will kick you out. We are planning for action-packed events including ice carving exhibitions, trivia contests, a Prognosticators Ball, woodchuck whittling, Scavenger Hunt, music, food, fun and games. If you happen to be celebrating a birthday on February 2nd, too darn bad; this is a Glenhog Day Celebration and if you want souvenir’s you better buy your own.
Was the 1993 film Groundhog Day really filmed in Punxsutawney?
We are asked this all the time (so stop asking). Unfortunately, the answer is no. Columbia Pictures decided to film the movie in a location more accessible to a major metropolitan center. Punxsutawney is located in a very rural area with few highways, so Woodstock, Illinois was chosen as the site for the movie. As a result adjustments had to be made for the production. The actual Gobbler's Knob is a wooded hill with a beautiful view; the Gobbler's Knob in the movie is moved to the town square though it is recreated to scale based on detailed notes and videos the crew made on its visit to Punxsutawney.
