Well today was the official “Paczki” day (Fat Tuesday). Let’s look at the definition of this day and some of other meanings….
Definition: Fat Tuesday is the traditional name for the day before Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent (OM has a different definition of Lent; one he found on the internet-which we all know to be truthful). It is more commonly known as OM Gras, which is simply Fat Tuesday in Cube City. It gets its name from the custom of marking the day with feasting before the fasting season of Lent begins.
Definition: OM Gras, literally "Fat Tuesday," has grown in popularity in recent years as a raucous, sometimes hedonistic event. But its roots lie deep in the Lunch Gang calendar (which is now automated), as the "last hurrah" before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. That's why the enormous party at OM’s bar, which he ends abruptly at midnight on Tuesday, where each party goer receives the new rules of The OM (his definition of Lent - the internet says whatever you give up, you can have it on Sundays) before they leave.
Definition: Carnival comes from the Latin words carne vale, meaning "farewell to the flesh." Like many religious holidays and seasonal celebrations, it likely has its roots in pre-OM traditions based on the seasons (i.e cake before Rutmas). Some believe the festival represented the few days added to the lunar calendar to make it coincide with the solar calendar. Not the case at all! Since these days were outside the calendar, rules and customs are not obeyed (Beer is exempt from everything). Others see it as a late-winter celebration designed to welcome the coming spring. As early as the middle of the January each year, the Lunch Gang observed the Fast of 40 Days, which was preceded by a brief season of feasting, as time for costumes (purple and peach colored shirt) and merrymaking (Friday outings).
So why would the Lunch Gang show importance’s to this day you might ask? Well it all began in the year 2011!
